Dionne Warwick may once have asked listeners to “Don't Make Me Over,” but the judges at RuPaul's Drag Race seems to feel differently.
In last week's episode (aired March 29), the five remaining contestants of RuPaul's Drag Race were tasked with giving Pit Crew members dancers from RuPaul's Drag Race Live in Las Vegas full drag makeovers. Transforming the hunting men into fellow drag queens — with a strong family resemblance, of course — the girls also had to teach their new drag daughters how to work the runway in a short choreographed number.
Continuing her winning streak, Plane Jane wowed the judges with her drag daughter Lazi Susan, winning her fourth challenge win of the season. Meanwhile, Sapphira Cristál stumbled to introduce her daughter Shakira Cristál, while the introduction of Morphine Love Dion's protégé La Tina failed to impress the panel, putting both queens in the bottom two.
Lip-synching to judge Kelsea Ballerini's “Miss Me More,” Sapphira's less-is-more approach to art paid off, earning her a spot in the season's coveted four queens. Meanwhile, Morphine's lip sync killing spree has finally come to an end, with the “Miami BBL Queen” finally bowing out of the competition.
Below, Morfini chats with Advertising sign about her time on the show, making it this far in the competition without a challenge win, her viral lip sync with Dawn, and her approach to drag makeup that fans have been bugging since she entered the workroom.
Congratulations on making the top five, Morphine! How does it feel to say this all these months later?
You know, during filming I had such a great time — obviously, not winning any challenges or any mini-challenges was difficult. I was like, 'Oh my God, the fans are going to think I failed.' But the love I've received has been so huge and intense and amazing that I honestly don't think they even care about my background, I feel like a lot of people just fell in love with my personality. Honestly, my run was perfect — well, obviously I should have been in the top four, but otherwise I'm very happy with how everything went down.
We need to talk about your mug. You've clearly perfected the art of drag makeup — what advice would you give to young queens who want to emulate your look?
So, funny enough, I just posted a picture of myself the first time I was in drag, and girl, it was crisp. This should inspire everyone that it is possible to go from a rough mug to a truly disgusting color — in fact, it gets better!
But yeah, it was a lot of practice and watching a lot of YouTube videos with now-cancelled online influencers. I also grabbed a lot of different inspirations. Like, I'll always say Valentina is my #1 mug inspiration, her paint is one of my favorites besides Raven. Both of them are just… I was teased in my mug. It just took me a while to perfect my own face and the fact that I love it so much is amazing.
Your color is so good that Trixie Mattel he adopted you in spectacle through The Pit Stop.
I know! I want to be sponsored by Trixie Cosmetics, my love. But she's the mother, so whatever she wants to give me, she can put me on her list — she can get me to co-sign Trixie Motel, whatever she wants I'll be there for her. I love you mom!
But the other thing you quickly became known for this season was your killer lip syncs. Did you have a favorite lip sync you had to do?
Oh, mine is obviously 'Body' against Miss Dawn. I literally felt the spirit of Megan Thee Stallion consume my body. like, possessed me. I remember Sapphira telling us that she started crying for Dawn before the song even started.
Oh, Dawn herself told us that the only thing she could think about while lip-syncing was which wig to put in which suitcase once it was over.
You know, the thing was, it wouldn't matter who I was syncing with. this song in particular plays in miami almost like a national anthem. Every morning, I wake up paying tribute to the Hotties by playing this song. It's literally hardwired into my nervous system at this point. So when they told us what song was happening that day, I was like, “Oh, okay. I'm safe another week.”
I mean, I started doing amateur drag competitions competing against other girls and Miami is known for having some of the best lip sync artists ever. So figuring out watching these queens execute timing perfectly, knowing how and when to do a reveal or break up or punch someone in the face was really important. I learned from all of them and then ended up using the same tricks on them in my competitions and won almost every fight competition I entered in Miami.
In this episode, you and the other girls took on a makeover challenge that was very similar to your exact vibe. When you're not under the pressure of a reality TV show, are you the kind of queen who enjoys making changes?
It's one of my favorite things to do, for sure. I do it often and I don't want to be dramatic, but I can change people's lives — at least when it comes to makeup! I've done my makeup on other queens before, and they've changed their whole approach as a result. Almost every person I've done looks exactly like me, so I was excited for this challenge because I thought I was totally winning the makeover challenge right at the end. I've done weddings, I've done quinceañeras, I've done it all.
It's helpful that your partner Miguel was just so hot, and so were you very is aware of this fact.
Girl! Straight up, I think that's why I lost this challenge, because I was too busy staring. I was fully prepared to leave the set and start a new life with him. What's so funny is that he actually has the most manly face. For some, that would be the hardest challenge, but I slowly fell in love with him and was like, “I'm going to do whatever it takes to make this man beautiful.” And I don't know, he was really… I missed the whole episode so much because he was righteous So fine.
Before I have to let you go, I'd love to know — what music are you listening to lately?
Besides Megan Thee Stallion's “Body” I'm obsessed with Kali Uchis new album, ORQUIDEAS, because it's crazy good. And also, Ariana's “The Boy Is Mine” is supreme. It's a bop.
