Sam Song Li loved Damien Chazelle's frenetic musical nightmare Lash So much so that his relationship with acting changed. After watching the film, the actor (The brothers' son, I have never, Better call Saul) sought out acting classes that reflected the film's tough approach to artistic practice, thankfully in less extreme circumstances.
In this episode of The Spark Parade, Song Li recalls her experience falling in love with the film, the impact it had on her way of creating art, and realizing the drawbacks of relentless negative feedback. Ultimately, she contemplates balancing challenging students without making their lives absolutely miserable. “I think it's a very nuanced conversation between what is too much and how much is too much discipline?” he asks.
He goes on to discuss how much the emotional journey of Miles Teller's character affected him as a viewer, as well as how he identified with the ways that inner turmoil can result in the pursuit of unhealthy relationships: “The way we tolerate cult-like behavior for the sake of an outside family, that wasn't talked about enough.”
