Santana Fox is a 26-year-old MC/producer from New York, best known as the daughter of the late Prodigy of Mobb Deep. She eventually followed in her father's footsteps by making music of her own couple years after his untimely death, releasing a handful of singles until her full-length debut Girl next door is celebrating its 2nd anniversary this summer. However, after seeing that her debut mixtape here was going to be completely self-produced, I went into it thinking that she would step it up a notch artistically since her potential has already been showcased in the past.
The first song “Space Cadet” after the introduction of “Wicked Poet's Prelude” begins with kicks, snares and pianos so that it can flow like a UFO following the “Hotline” skit, “Vinyl Dust” keeps it dirty by speaking organically about going viral on the hate that was her favorite rapper taking back their sound. “Fight Me” featuring Pohumiteater brings a synth/boom bap vibe to the fold and boasts that they haven't seen or heard anything like it and after the break “Hypnotherapy”, “Tokyo Trippin” makes it clear that the drugs are doing her right. to do drugs on her own & the consequences of her bad lessons.
Mike Shabb joins Santana on the title track with the best feature on the tape incorporating a darker sound that questions who they become just to make them happy and after the “Sittin' by the Lake” skit, “Pray4Mine ” he keeps talking about it. praying for her n***a. After the 'Cards Never Lie' skit, the penultimate track 'Moment of Silence' featuring Prodigy himself comes to a close one dumbly asking her father why they're acting like they owe her something before walking away, and closer 'Count Me Out' closes shop with some pianos shooing away her detractors.
It feels like an EP if you take out all 5 sketches and the interludes, but at the same time you keep them in, it's more of a mix and something that I think any Mobb Deep fan like myself would enjoy because Santana is very much carrying the legacy of her dad in her own way and I'm sure he's looking at her with pride for the groundbreaking entrance A pleasure for the eyes is in her discography. Her production is a cut above Girl next doorAs well as her feature couplet and songwriting are way up.
