Selena Gomez is taking another break from social media. According People magazine, the Only murders in the building The star posted an Instagram Story on Tuesday (January 9) detailing her latest social hiatus in an effort to focus on “what really matters.” The Story was accompanied by an image of producer friend Benny Blanco fooling around with two unidentified young children as Gomez announced, “I've been off social media for a while. I focus on what really matters.”
Gomez announced a similar social time out in October due to what she called “hate, violence and terror” around the world, adding that “people being tortured and killed or any act of hate towards any group is horrible” and that “ALL people ” must be protected, “especially children”. That post came weeks after Hamas militants invaded Israel and killed more than 1,200 Israelis and took 240 hostages in the worst attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust, triggering a three-month Israeli military response that has reportedly killed more than 22,000 Palestinians.
Gomez didn't elaborate on what prompted her latest hiatus from social media in Tuesday's comment, though it came shortly after she took to the Insta comments section to respond to rumors about the moment she shared with friend Taylor Swift at her Golden Globes Sunday. The rampant, gossipy speculation about what the two women were talking about reached such a fever pitch that Gomez felt it necessary to explain what she, Swift and Miles Teller's wife, Kelly, were talking about.
“Was Selena Gomez Gossip on Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet at the Golden Globes?” asked an E! The news headline is activated Instagram, to which Gomez replied, “No, I told Taylor about two of my friends hooking up. Not that it's anyone's business.”
Gomez had previously announced a social hiatus in Feb. 2023 — telling followers on TikTok “I'm too old for this” — after saying With style in January 2022 that, “Taking a break from social media was the best decision I've ever made for my mental health.” At the time, the singer/actress who currently has 429 million Instagram followers explained that she had set up a system “where I still don't have my passwords. And the unnecessary hate and comparisons disappeared as soon as I put my phone down. I'll have times when that weird feeling comes back, but now I'm in a much better relationship with myself.”
