As Selena fans celebrate the 30th anniversary of her No. 1 album Amor Prohibidothe remastered version of the set makes its No. 1 debut Advertising signThe Vinyl Albums chart (dated July 20) after the first vinyl pressing. Released via Capitol Latin/UMLE, it is the second Latin album to debut at the top of the chart in 2024 after Kali Uchis Orchids in January.
Amor Prohibido lands No. 1 on Vinyl Albums, marking the Latina legend's second No. 1 in the 13-year span. It follows the No. 1-peak Shewhich spent a week as head in 2020.
Amor Prohibido bows with 10,000 vinyl copies sold in the US during the July 5-11 tracking week, according to Luminate. Selena nearly doubles her previous biggest week on vinyl, set in 2020 when She sold 6,000 copies in its second week on the chart (list dated July 18, 2020). That week, a limited vinyl edition of the greatest hits album saw the set return to No. 1. It had earlier debuted on the chart in 2016 with 3,000 first-week sales (November 5, 2016 chart). when She re-entered the chart at No. 1, becoming the first Latin album to top Vinyl Albums since the chart's launch in January 2011.
The new remastered Amor Prohibito was pressed on four vinyl variants – a standard clear version, a pink Target exclusive (containing a poster), a coke bottle Spotify exclusive and a picture disc variant sold through Selena's website.
Its new version Amor Prohibido It was also released on CD, cassette (exclusive to Selena's webstore) and digital download. All versions – old and new – are combined for tracking and mapping purposes. All versions of the 2024 album retain the track listing of the original 1994 10-song album.
In total, Amor Prohibido marks just the fourth Latin album to reach No. 1 on the Vinyl Albums chart – out of 499 total No. 1s on the list. The set is next to Selena's She (one week, July 2020), Bad Bunny's Anniversary trilogy (one week, Jan. 2022) and Kali Uchis' Orchids (one week, Jan. 2024). Uchis also scored another No.1 effort on Vinyl Albums via her English-language set, Red Moon on Venus in March 2023.
In addition to his No. 1 debut on Vinyl Albums with 10,000 sales, Amor Prohibido re-enters Top album Sales, after nearly three decades, at No. 4, with 11,000 sold (in all formats, physical and digital, of the album). Additionally, it climbs 47-5 on Top Latin Albums and 21-4 on Regional Mexican Albums with 13,000 equivalent album units gained over the same period, 2,000 coming from streaming activity, equating to 3.54 million official streams on order of its 10 album MUSIC PIECES.
In 1994, Amor Prohibido became the first Tejano album to reach No. 1 on Top Latin Albums, spending 20 total weeks at No. 1. It was only the second set to top the still-young chart (which was released in July 1993), after the Gloria Estefan Mi Tierra he ruled for 58 weeks between July 1993 and June 1994.
Three of the album's songs dominated Hot Latin Songs in 1994: “Amor Prohibido” (nine weeks), “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” (four) and “No Me Queda Más” (seven weeks).
