Serena Williams took a comedic jab at NFL player Harrison Butker in 2024 ESPYSexciting social media users.
The 2024 ESPY Awards it was that took place live on Thursday (July 11) and Kansas City Chiefs' Harrison Butker was the subject of one of the biggest laughs of the night thanks to host Serena Williams. She is standing on stage with her sister, Venus Williams, and Abbott Elementary Starring Quinta Brunson delivered a raucous monologue about how fans can enjoy women's sports. “So go ahead and enjoy women's sports as you would any other sport, because they are sports,” Venus Williams said. “Except you, Harrison Butker. We don't need you,” Serena said. “Not at all. Like ever,” Branson replied.
The crowd – which included Chiefs player and coach Andy Reid – erupted in laughter. It was another crack at Butker in response to his controversial commencement speech given to graduating students at Benedictine College last May. In his remarks, he criticized those who are “pushing dangerous gender ideologies on America's youth.” He touched on his opposition to LGBTQIA communities, disapproving of transgender athletes in sports. The conservative Christian also congratulated the female graduates, but also said: “I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.” The comments drew Butcher a lot of rebuke from many in the audience, despite quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Coach Reid defending him.
Serena's stingy bar drew the attention of some who mocked the 23-time Grand Slam winner, with some suggesting that women's sports weren't that important anyway. Many others, however, strongly supported her joke, especially on social media.
