Amidst the vibrant lights and buzzing energy of Foxwoods Casino in CT, a line of eager fans gathered to experience a truly unique spectacle: Sessanta. This special tour, marking Maynard James Keenan's 60th birthday, promised an unforgettable night of music and celebration with performances from A perfect circle, Primusand Puscifer.
Sessanta it's more than just a concert. it was an exciting experience from the moment attendees passed through the metal detectors. Exclusive merchandise, including beautifully designed tour posters and limited edition prints for each band, greeted fans as they made their way to the main theater.
Inside the theater the atmosphere exploded with anticipation. Large screens flanking the stage displayed messages discouraging cell phone use, while a curated playlist of birthday tunes filled the air. The audience, a mix of dedicated fans and curious casino onlookers, displayed a variety of styles, from cocktail chic to gothic, reflecting the eclectic genres of music they were about to experience.
As the clock struck 8 in the evening, a subtle change in the atmosphere of the venue signaled the start of the show. The lights dimmed, casting a soft glow over the stage as the screens flickered to life. There appeared Maynard James Keenan, dressed in eccentric attire reminiscent of Puscifer's “Apocalyptical” video, with a sleek suit, aviator sunglasses and smudged lipstick. The video began in a spontaneous speech, humorously with the mysterious substance in the spam that is people using mobile phones during the show.
As TVs switch to A perfect circle”logo, anticipation ran through the crowd. The first notes of 'The Package' reverberated throughout the venue, heralding the start of an electrifying performance. Emerging from the darkness, Maynard stood tall at the top of the stage, a striking silhouette against the vibrant lights.
Lamp lights suspended from the ceiling illuminated the stage with a warm glow, enhancing the overall visual experience. As the music grew louder, the lights pulsated in perfect harmony, casting deep, warm oranges that danced along with the beat, engrossing the audience and adding to the exciting atmosphere.
The set featured a multi-level design that not only served as a visually stunning backdrop but also facilitated dynamic interactions between band members and the audience. Sofas line the upper level, providing a comfortable yet elevated view of the unfolding spectacle. In the center stood three drum kits, each representing the bands performing that night and symbolizing the collaborative spirit of the event.
On each side of the stage, steps led down to the main floor, where microphone stands awaited the performers, while an electric standup bass was ready for the arrival of Les Claypool. The entire setup was buzzing with anticipation, hinting at the outstanding performances yet to unfold.
The transition from “The Package” to “Disillusioned” was executed flawlessly, creating an engaging and seamless experience. Once again, the lighting played a key role in setting the tone, bathing the venue in warm hues during the verses and transitioning to intense yet calm blues as the chorus began. What made the moment truly special was the absolute silence that enveloped the crowd, with no sound to be heard except for Maynard's captivating performance. There were no cell phones, no cheers. simply a sold-out audience enthralled by the beauty unfolding before them. It was a truly magical moment.
As 'The Contrarian' drew to a close, the screens transitioned seamlessly from the stage's live feeds to reveal the iconic Primus logo. A perfect circle they took their seats on the couch while the lights changed from warm oranges and blues to vibrant magentas and greens. The first familiar notes of “Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers” filled the theater as Primus appeared on stage, led by the legendary Les Claypool wearing a suit and bowler hat.
With Primus, the mood and tone shifted to a lighter, eccentric vibe, reflecting the band's experimental fusion of funk and rock sounds. Known as a bass virtuoso, Claypool effortlessly commanded his instrument, imbuing every note with Primushis signature style. His signature bass lines, combined with his trademark “Les Claypool march” as he played, captivated the audience.
One of its highlights PrimusIts performance is the prominence of the bass. The guitar and drums serve to enhance and complement the sounds coming from the bass, each element contributing to the overall soundscape. They continued with crowd favorites like “Too Many Puppies” and “Sgt Baker”, eliciting enthusiastic sing-alongs from fans and further cementing Primus' position as a beloved icon in the alternative rock world.
Once again, the screen changed smoothly, revealing the feature Puscifer logo as the first notes of 'Man Overboard' reverberated through the venue. Puscifer it really serves as the harmonic bridge that connects Primus and A perfect circle together. Their music effortlessly straddles the line between melodic and experimental, echoing the different sounds that both encompass A perfect circle and Primus.
As the electronic beats mingled with the vocals of Carina Round and Maynard, a seamless blend of voices and sounds filled the air. The ethereal quality of their harmonies created a mesmerizing experience for the audience, captivating them with every haunting note and pulsating beat. PusciferHis performance not only highlighted their unique style, but also their ability to unite disparate elements into one
cohesive and captivating musical journey. They continued with 'Tiny Monsters' and 'Indigo Children'
The concert featured a dynamic 29-song setlist that covered his performances A perfect circle, Primusand Puscifer, offering a diverse and electrifying musical experience. Highlights included A perfect circlethe powerful performances of “Judith” and “The Hollow”, Primushis iconic tracks “My Name is Mud” and “Jerry Was a Racecar Driver” and PusciferEnchanting renditions of “Momma Sed” and “The Remedy”.
Each band took their turn on stage, delivering standout performances that showcased their unique styles and talents. Special guest appearances further elevated the collaborative atmosphere, with memorable moments such as Maynard James Keenan Primus for 'Tommy the Cat' and his Tim Alexander Primus adding his expertise to A perfect circleof “The Hollow.” In particular, Josh Freese, drummer of Foo Fighters, made a triumphant return A perfect circle after 13 years, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event.
Fans were in for a special treat as each of the bands presented brand new music during the concert. The Sessanta EP, EPPPavailable for purchase athe Sessanta website and in the show, features three exclusive tracks: “The Kindred” by A perfect circle“No Angel” by Pusciferand “Pablo's Hippos” by Primuswith Maynard on the track.
These new songs offer a glimpse into each band's distinct sounds and characteristics. “The Kindred” captures the haunting melodies and emotional depth A perfect circle is known for, while “No Angel” from Puscifer introduces listeners to their eclectic mix of electronic and rock elements. “Pablo's Hippos” by Primus brings their signature funk sound to the fore, with Maynard's presence adding an extra layer of intrigue to the track.
Despite each band's distinct style, they complemented each other perfectly, creating an unforgettable musical experience. The night was filled with memorable moments, from Maynard receiving a cupcake with a single candle to an intense Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots battle between Maynard and Carina Round. A personal favorite was Les Claypool's dramatic entrance with Pig Mask and his bow as he ascended the elevator to the second level.
The best moment of the night was “Grand Canyon” when everyone was on stage. It was a true moment of musical genius to see so much talent in one location. Claypool, dawning his pig mask, took his place with his electric cello. The deep hits of all three drummers in sync with each other, the guitarists all performing deep rifts, and the vocals of Maynard and Round combine everything into a perfect cherry on top to end such a wacky epic night.
As the final notes of the concert reverberated through the theater, the audience erupted in applause and cheers, their spirits soaring after an unforgettable night of music. Slowly, the crowd began to disperse, reluctantly leaving the lively atmosphere of the venue behind as they made their way back into the bustling casino.
Exiting the theater, fans were once again greeted by the neon glow and live sounds of Foxwoods Casino. Conversations were bubbling with excitement as concertgoers shared their favorite moments from the show, their faces illuminated by the colorful lights of the slot machines.
