Film composer Danny Elfman was sued for defamation Wednesday over statements he made Rolling rock last year in an article detailing sexual harassment allegations leveled against him and a subsequent settlement and non-disclosure agreement to keep the claims private.
Los Angeles composer Nomi Abadi's defamation suit — filed in Los Angeles — comes a year after Rolling rock The investigation first revealed her allegations that Elfman exposed and sexually harassed her in 2016, before she and Elfman entered into an $830,000 settlement and NDA a year later. Abadi filed a breach-of-contract lawsuit over the settlement last July, claiming Elfman had missed several payments. The matter went to arbitration late last year. In a filing earlier this month, Abadi's lawyers claimed the arbitration had not yet been scheduled, despite several attempts to work with Elfman's lawyers to find a date.
“Defendant Danny Elfman lied horribly for publication Rolling rock for Nomi, who had previously in a previous lawsuit candidly relayed facts confirming his propensity for sexually abusing women,” the lawsuit said. “Why? As part of a 'zero-sum' scheme by Elfman to prop up his checkered reputation by destroying Nomi's credibility.” (Elfman's lawyer did not immediately return Rolling rockrequest for comment.)
Rolling rockHis initial investigation included allegations that Abadi had confided in several friends, as well as information detailed in a police report. She claimed that Elfman exposed himself and masturbated multiple times in front of Abadi, that he took nude photos of her in a Paris hotel room and that he presented her with a martini glass filled with what she said Elfman told her was semen. In a lengthy statement at the time, Elfman denied ever exposing himself and masturbating in front of Abadi, denied ever saying the glass contained semen, and claimed Abadi was the one who requested the photo shoot.
In his statement, Elfman said he “allowed someone to approach me without knowing that I was her 'childhood love' and that her intent was to break up my marriage and replace my wife. When this person realized I wanted to move away from her, she made it clear to me that I would pay for rejecting her,” he said.
In the defamation suit, Abadi alleges that Elfman defamed her by not only denying all the various allegations of misconduct, but also by falsely portraying her as “a failed temptress who lied about him for revenge and greed.”
Abadi also claims that Elfman defamed her by stating that he had pushed for the nude photos. In a response last year, a spokesman for Elfman said Abadi “was fired almost immediately without any encouragement.” In the suit, Abadi alleged that Elfman “forced” her to take the photos. More specifically, in the complaint, Abadi alleged that during the photo shoot, while Elfman had his hand on his penis, he “grabbed Nomi by the wrist with his other hand, sticking her hand on her genitals” and instructed to masturbate as well. .
“Nomi was terrified, frozen, and pretended to appease defendant Elfman,” the lawsuit said, adding that Elfman “instructed Nomi 'not to tell anyone about Paris' or she would be 'dead meat.' apologized and that he “accused of losing control, stating that 'something had gotten into him.'
Abadi's latest defamation claim revolves around the alleged martini glass incident. Elfman first sent a photo of the glass to Abadi in an email, captioning it as a “mystery pik [sic] To spark your 'imagination''. According to the police report filed by Abadi, she claimed Elfman told her the glass was full of semen. An Elfman spokesman said the glass actually contained Cetaphil skin care product. Abadi alleges that Elfman defamed her by not only denying that the martini glass was filled with semen, but further claiming that Abadi knew it was not.
Abadi's suit includes a lengthy description of her alleged history with Elfman, with Abadi claiming that when she was presented with the glass, she “sat in silence, horrified, gagged by the putrid smell emanating from the glass of white substance.”
Abadi is seeking unspecified monetary and punitive damages to be determined by the court.
“Defendant Elfman lied about Nomi, portraying her as a scorned woman who was trying to break up his marriage and as someone who initiated the nude photo shoot,” the suit states. “As a result of the defamation of Elfman and his representatives, Nomi has suffered humiliation, both personally and professionally, within their shared composing industry and on the Internet, and harm to her professional reputation and profession as a composer, musician and educator”.
Abadi isn't the only woman to come forward with allegations of misconduct against Elfman. Three months later The Rolling Stones original story, A second unnamed woman came forward with similar allegations of sexual harassment of her own. “It's important for this Jane Doe Nomi to know that she's not alone anymore, that what Elfman did to her mirrors in many ways what was done to Nomi,” said attorney Jeff Anderson, who represents both Abadi and the unnamed woman. Elfman denied those allegations as well, saying the lawsuit was filed “with the ulterior motive of embarrassing Mr. Elfman and extorting settlement money.”
