The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer talks about her collaboration with producer Mike Elizondo, a Dr. Dre protégé who has worked with everyone from 50 Cent to Fiona Apple, in an attempt to break away from her usual bag of tricks. “It's hard for me to celebrate the way music works now,” he explains. “Because you can feel like your best work is in front of me, but the opportunity to break through everything that's out there is so slim and none that instead of thinking about what I can write to break through, I write what's out there. It's just that I can feel very good about a) performing and b) then going out and playing live.”

But don't expect her to fly around the sand like her tour partner. “I tried out to be a cheerleader when I was in seventh grade, I'm the least flexible person ever,” she says with a smile. “So, I probably won't do any stunts, but I'll definitely try to hang my guitar a little bit.”
