The story of Skinny Living is one of struggle, troubling situations and relentless hard work. It's also a time of synchronicity, chance encounters, and the unwavering belief that their glorious indie soul music will reach the audience it deserves.
Echoing Bill Withers, Van Morrison, The Isley Brothers and Bobby Caldwell, their songs shine with soft, timeless beauty, exquisite vocal harmonies, and a lyrical wisdom that inspires optimism and reflection in equal measure.
The band's sound is defined by twin acoustic guitar and vocal harmonies delivered by Wakefield natives Will Booth and Danny Hepworth, while the exquisite, slightly haunted vocals and lyricism amidst it all belong to Belfast-born frontman Ryan Johnston . with a Catholic mother from the Republican area and a Protestant father from the other side of the city. Their polar opposite origins meant the family moved to Bangor before Ryan moved to England, where he met Will and Danny at an open mic night and formed the band.
“Skinny Living is a term that describes the financial reality and lifestyle of the working class. A hard job with a low income, a desire to live, a passion for family and an optimistic attitude about the future.”
With over 85 million streams worldwide, Skinny Living will release their debut album 'Day by Day' on October 11, 2024.
In the words of the band itself, “'Day by Day' explores the emotions of life. Lyrically, it sheds light on the relationships between family and close friends, those to whom we dedicate our care and time. It's about the triumphs and mistakes we make along the way and focuses on the power we all have as individuals to get ahead when times get tough, both alone and together. Musically, this album is heavily influenced by soul music and draws inspiration from timeless indie, folk, pop, RnB and alternative music.”
