Genre-blending English quintet Squid have announced a new album on the way. CowardsTheir third LP will arrive on February 7 via Warp, and they have offered a first look at the album with “Crispy Skin.” Watch the extensive music video below.
“Crispy Skin,” the album’s opener, sees an opening synth that quickly descends into a driving beat. The haunting music video was directed by Takashi Ito and acts as an adaptation of his short film, Areacentered on a faceless individual.
“I couldn't eat anything else/No more pages and pages of crunchy skin,” sings lead vocalist Ollie Judge. In a statement, he shares that the theme of the track was inspired by the novel. tender is the meatin which a virus has contaminated all the meat, causing the normalization of cannibalism. “Humans are manufactured and sold in supermarkets,” he explains. “The song was written about how the reality of having a moral compass in these stories of despair and horror would be extremely difficult.”
To celebrate the album announcement, Squid will play an intimate, sold-out show at DROM in New York City. In early 2025, the band will embark on a tour of Europe and the United Kingdom; Tickets for all dates will go on sale Wednesday, November 20.
