The last day of February arrives with abundant blessings from Saint Vincent. In addition to sharing a new song and video titled 'Broken Man' on Thursday (February 29), singer-songwriter Annie Clark also announced that her next album, All born screaming, due to arrive this spring.
Set atop sharp-edged electric guitar and industrial-sounding percussion, “Broken Man” grows angrier and harsher as Clark wails, “Hey, what are you looking at?/ Who the hell do you think I am?/ And what are you you looking/ Like you've never seen a broken man.”
In the music video, she sings the song's lyrics into an old-fashioned microphone as parts of her body burst into flames. At the end of the visual, the indie musician is completely engulfed in fire.
The song will appear All Born Screaming, one of the 10 tracks on St. John's seventh studio album. Vincent – the cover of which borrows a shot of the singer spontaneously combusting from the 'Broken Man' music video. Clark confirmed Thursday that the LP will be released on April 26 via Virgin Music Group.
“There are some places, emotionally, that you can only get to by taking a long walk in the woods alone — to find out what your heart is really saying,” he said in a statement. “It rings true because it is true.”
All Born Screaming follows the effort of St. Vincent in 2021 The Nowhere Inn. He last released music in 2022, during which he released a single titled “Piggy” as well as a cover of “Funkytown” for Minions: Rise of Gru soundtrack.
