Here are our staff's picks for favorite albums of August 2024, listed in alphabetical order.
David Rawlings and Gillian Welch— Forest
Few things in life are as reliable as the output of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. If those two names grace some dusty, worn-out cover, folk fans around the world will start salivating like Pavlov's puppies. Forest is no exception. Following the 2020 cover project All the good times, Forest is a welcome return to masterfully composed, exceptionally written, and beautifully performed original compositions. The lyrics are revealing (something Welch is known for), the guitar work is intricate and mesmerizing, and the production is as lush as the pair have always allowed it to be. All in all, Forest It's a warm, timeless journey into classic folk styles, and far exceeds the already high bar Welch and Rawlings have set for themselves. I. Krueger
