The Pennsylvania House of Representatives has declared 2023 the state's “Age of Taylor Swift.”
Correctly, House Resolution 282 passed by a vote of 103-100 on December 13, 2023, officially marking the past year as the “Era of Taylor Swift” in the state of Pennsylvania, celebrating Consistency's Artist of the Year for her myriad of significant achievements.
Sponsored by Rep. Danielle Friel Otten, the resolution's language highlights Swift's impact on Pennsylvania's economy and population, citing everything from her fans' fight with Ticketmaster to her charitable donations, her involvement in the Get Out the Vote campaigns, the financial incentive her historic Eras tour, and not just as an excuse. “It is clear that Pennsylvania is in the 'Age of Taylor Swift,'” the resolution states.
The resolution also notes that Swift is a Pennsylvania native who grew up on a Christmas tree farm in Berks County. Last week, year The magazine named Swift its 2023 Person of the Year, which lawmakers noted marks the first time a Pennsylvania native has been “independently recognized” with the honor.
Some lawmakers, such as Rep. Wendy Fink, opposed the resolution. Speaking on the floor, Fink said “House resolutions are not legislation and their consideration should not be a function of our government.” In response, during the passage of the resolution, spokeswoman Joanna McClinton joked that “Haters gonna hats, haters, hats, hat, hats,” referencing Swift's 2014 song, “Shake It Off.” Watch session highlights from the AP below.
