HBO has confirmed a 10-episode, straight-to-series order for a new comedy show starring Steve Carell, who will also be an executive producer.
The half-hour comedy is set to be co-executive produced by Bill Lawrence (Ted Lasso and Shrinking) and Matt Tarses (The Goldbergs). Lawrence and Tarses previously overlapped on the beloved comedy Scrubs, and the two are set to co-write the first episode.
While details are currently slim on the upcoming program, with the show’s title and any co-stars with Carell still yet to be revealed, the logline confirms the single-camera comedy will take place on a college campus. Carell’s character is described as an author who has a “complicated relationship with his daughter.”
“HBO has long been a standard bearer of quality TV,” Bill Lawrence shared in a statement. “Getting to do a show there with Steve Carell is an immediate career highlight for Matt and me.”
In the meantime, Steve Carell is acting onstage in a production of Uncle Vanya at New York’s Lincoln Center. He’s also set to return to television in the Netflix series The Four Seasons, in which he’ll team back up with Tina Fey.
