Get ready to talk about the Super Bowl halftime some more. During a new interview, Super Bowl halftime producer Jesse Collins was asked about the controversy surrounding the selection of Kendrick Lamar as a headliner and Lil Wayne's alleged embarrassment from New Orleans.
“We love Wayne,” Collins said Variety when the issue was raised. “There's always a chance in Vegas about who's going to do it. But I think we're going to put on an amazing show with Kendrick, and I think everyone is going to love the halftime show. I know Kendrick will work extremely hard to put on an amazing show.”
He then shed some light on who has the final say, ultimately revealing that Jay-Z is the one making the call, with his Roc Nation co-producing halftime. “It's a decision that Jay makes,” he said. “Since we've been doing this show, he's done it every year and it's been amazing. It's always the right choice!”
With this season's Super Bowl in New Orleans for a record-tying 11th time, many expected Lil Wayne to get the call. After some of his peers came to his defense, the Young Money boss posted a video expressing his disappointment, saying he wasn't cast to play “broken” and blaming himself for assuming he was going to be cast.
Jay found himself at the center of this decision, with the likes of Nicki Minaj and Birdman blaming his complicated relationship with both Cash Money and Young Money over the years as the reason behind the “snub.”
Back in 2019, Jay-Z and Roc Nation struck a partnership with the NFL that will task the mogul and his team with being the league's “live music entertainment strategist” and helping with social justice reform initiatives.
