The Bangles' Susanna Hoffs dives into her personal archive of unreleased gems with The lost recorda collection of songs from the late 90s that are only now seeing the light of day. Chatting with Kyle Meredith, Hoffs shares how this “lost” album came to be, from its serendipitous origins in his garage to collaborating with the likes of the Tuesday Night Music Club crew, the same musical collective that brought Sheryl Crow’s debut album to life. Reflecting on the sound and era of the project, Hoffs talks about his fascination with the '90s zeitgeist, the influence of Nirvana, and how the garage band felt guided by songs like “Under a Cloud,” which later re-recorded The Bangles. He also talks about recording the song “Life on the Inside” with half of The Go-Go's, instantly forming a supergroup: “I still have things that I wrote with them that I haven't released yet.”
Among the album's nostalgic gems is a subtle nod to Prince, who was famous for giving away The bracelets Hoffs recently posted a photo of Prince's original cassette tape, which not only contained “Manic Monday” but also a second song called “Jealous Girl.” While The Bangles never recorded “Jealous Girl,” Prince did record it with Vanity (from Vanity 6), and a posthumous version appeared on his Times Signature deluxe box set. Hoffs, who had not heard the song until recently, expressed genuine excitement at finally being able to hear the song that “could have been” in The Bangles' catalog.
Hoffs also reveals his continued passion for storytelling, both in music and writing. With his first novel. The bird has flown Opted for film, she is immersed in a second draft and working on a sequel.
