Catching up with Suzanne Vega backstage at Bourbon and Beyond, Kyle Meredith dove into the timeless artist's latest adventures, including her new single “Rats.” Listen above or wherever you get your podcasts.
“Rats” is a brave homage to the darkest corners of New York City, inspired by punk mainstays like The Ramones and new post-punk group Fontaines DC. The timing couldn't be better: the song appeared alongside the first National Rat Summit in New York, giving Vega's theme an appropriate place among the urban arena it romanticizes.
Vega's creative partner on this track, and for the past two decades, is Gerry Leonard, whose Bowie-esque guitar work adds layers of texture ranging from industrial folk to melancholic jazz. “Gerry has that vibe,” Vega explains, “where he can make anything sound like it belongs in New York.”
The real news? Vega's first album since 2016 is scheduled for spring, coinciding (or not) with the 40th anniversary of her iconic self-titled debut. Vega hints that this new album oscillates between genres; Expect everything from folk rock to a Motown-inspired song, and even a song with a '70s California vibe. For fans, it's a return to the kind of thematic storytelling that has always marked his work, with new twists. on familiar urban motifs. “Life gets in the way,” he laughs, referring to his album's longest hiatus, “but there's always something in New York to write about.”
