The live show is good for Adam Lazzarahis soul. Says the Take Back Sunday singer Advertising sign'small Behind the Setlist podcast that shuts out the world and loses track of time while on stage takes a mental and emotional toll. “If you can do it over and over and over,” Lazzara says as he exhales deeply, “it's better than any treatment I've found—and I've tried a lot.”
On the road this summer in support of the band's latest album, 152, Lazzara has learned how to take better care of himself to withstand the rigors of being on the road. Take Back Sunday's backstage rider now includes healthier snacks like melons, trail mix instead of Oreo cookies and coffee. “And then water,” he says from a tour stop in sun-scorched Arizona. “There's so much water everywhere it's just wonderful.”
Lazzara's mindset was different in his younger years, when Take Back Sunday was establishing itself as a prominent rock band and had five charting albums in the top 20 of the Billboard 200: Where you want to be (2004), Louder now (2006), New again (2009), Taking back Sunday (2011) and Happiness is (2014). He says he would call the band's longtime agent Matt Galle [formerly with Paradigm and now with CAA] and ask him to put them on the road for long periods. “We are not interested [being] home,” Lazzara was saying. “Keep us busy. Keep us working.”
For the current tour, however, the band decided not to tour for more than four or five weeks without a break. Anything more and “the reality changes,” Lazzara says, making the transition from touring artist to family man more difficult. “The older the kids get, the harder it is to go away and lose things.”
Take Back Sunday is taking a break from late June to late July before resuming the tour — with Citizen as support act — in Pittsburgh on July 24. The band heads to the Northeast and Canada for the Toronto Beer festival on July 28th before returning to the States on July 30th in Newport, KY, and heading to Lake Buena Vista, FL on August 1st. This run of shows ends in New York on August 18th. The band then travels to Los Angeles to play the Hellenic Theater on August 21st.
The final tour dates currently scheduled are Riot Fest in Chicago from September 20-22 and the When We Were Young festival in Las Vegas on October 19-20. At the end of the year, Lazzara says, the band will keep up the tradition and play holiday shows in New York's Long Island and New Jersey. “We definitely do that,” he says.
