Taylor Swift caused some Tormented Poets-Level of hysteria when he performed “Guilty as Sin?” live for the first time at the Eras tour stop in Stockholm, Sweden on Saturday (May 18).
Swift, who spectacularly brought her Eras to Stockholm's Friends Arena for a trio of dates this weekend, praised Saturday's “absolutely wild” audience at the start of the show's acoustic set, during which she performed surprise songs on each tour date .
“You've just been fueling us all night,” Swift said of the crowd's energy.
“It makes me want to play one of my favorite songs Tormented Poets which I've never played live before,” he teased. Swift gave her guitar some strums leading into a first line that has become instantly familiar to fans in the few weeks since her latest album came out: “Drowning in the Blue Nile/ She sent me 'Downtown Lights'/ I hadn't heard in a little bit.”
The Friends Arena audience screamed. People online shared the same sentiment, but via memes of Post Malone dancing to “Guilty as Sin?” and dry remarks about the tragedy of not being in the room with Swift for the track's live debut.
“What if he writes 'mine' on my upper thigh/ Only in my mind?” Swift sings on the track from Department of Tormented Poets. “One slip and I fall back into the fence maze/ Oh what a way to die/ I keep remembering things we never did/ Messy kiss on the upper lip/ How I long for our efforts/ Without ever touching his skin/ How can I am I guilty as sin?'
“The way she sang guilty as sin as the first surprise song at her 89th show and opened with the lines 'he send me downtown lights' released in 1989,” a fan on X, ex-Twitter, pointed out, referring to the band. Blue Nile and Swift's reference in their song “Downtown Lights”. (Saturday night marked Eras' 89th tour date since the trek began in March 2023).
“I'm taking the loss of Guilty As Sin very well,” remarked another, sharing evidence of both IKEA and ABBA being blocked in response to Sweden's surprise song win.
“Guilty as sin?” — which was followed by a 1989 The piano mash-up of “Say Don't Go,” “Welcome to New York” and “Clean” — continued to trend on X in the hours after Swift's performance.
