After seven years at her label, Tenille Townes and Sony Nashville have parted ways.
Although Townes has enjoyed major success in her native Canada, including winning 15 Canadian Country Music Association Awards over the past five years, her career Stateside has never seen the same rise, even after winning the ACM Award for new female artist in 2019.
On Monday (August 26), Towns took to Instagram to update her fans in a narrated video featuring various images, including a Polaroid photo with the words “I'm free” next to a heart, as an acoustic, instrumental version of Played “Blackbird” by the Beatles.
“My record label Nashville and I have parted ways. This is not a sob story, but a story of opportunity. We had a very good run and this is a big change for me. We've been working together for over seven years, but we don't see eye to eye on my music and my path, and it's been a struggle creatively waiting for the green light in a corporate system that doesn't make much sense anymore,” he said. “I want the freedom to write and record a song and be able to bring it to you, and making this decision means I can do that as I take ownership of what I create. And that's liberating and if I'm being honest it's also scary. A lot of fear, but I'm doing it anyway and I'm excited to figure out what's next on my own terms. Well, this is me as a newly independent artist and a person in progress telling you that I'm embarking on a new journey of learning to bet on myself again and I hope you'll join me.”
Although critically acclaimed, Townes' biggest hit in the US was 2018's “Somebody's Daughter”, which peaked at No. 1 in Canada but peaked at No. 26 on the Country Airplay chart in the US.
Townes released a full-length album in the US in 2020 The Lemonade Standpeaked at No. 41 on the Top Country Albums chart. He has also released four EPs, the most recent Railroad track work tapes last year.
Townes kicks off a Canadian tour on October 9th.
Sony Nashville did not return a request for comment.
