The loss of several Hip-Hop legends in recent years has introduced a somber spirit into the culture. As hip-hop turned 50 and with a steady stream of premature health tragedies, a chance meeting on Wall Street between a cardiologist, a health advocate and a music artist led to The CHECK IN which is born.
To alleviate this ongoing cultural health crisis, Dr. Joseph A. Puma of Sorin Medical, Health Advocate and Media Personality Kenya Gipson (Coach Kenya) and Rapper, Maino decided to address some of the disparities in care affecting communities of color “Front” by creating a platform that is both entertaining and informative . It is designed to empower people everywhere to take their health destiny into their own hands through a proactive approach. Since most health conditions are treatable and preventable if caught early, the program aims to ease some of the stress faced every day when it comes to understanding and learning about one's health to make informed and informed decisions.
How is CHECK IN – Hip-Hop's first health platform – different from other platforms in the space?
The CHECK IN is Hip-Hop's first health and wellness platform designed, from the ground up, to change and save lives. Telling real stories of hip-hop artists and others in the game, The CHECK IN educates and informs in a fun way. One particular episode features artist and rapper Lady Luck, who had dangerously low blood levels that required four blood transfusions. These low rates were caused by chronic bleeding from uterine fibroids, which affect three out of five women of color by age 50. If he waited to connect with Dr. Puma, would run the risk of an extremely dangerous and potentially negative outcome. Hearing first-hand from artists and executives in the hip-hop world on this program will highlight symptoms and illnesses viewers may never have heard of so they can seek out tests and treatments that could benefit themselves. For example, many signs of coronary heart disease can be missed using traditional diagnostics and stress tests. Advanced CT technology is a three-minute, non-invasive test that captures images of the heart and prostate in men and fibroids in women. With education and awareness, we can reduce morbidity and mortality from common diseases that plague the community.
What will people experience from CHECK IN?
Authenticity. Each story is presented in The CHECK IN has a unique background and covers real health scenarios with real-time solutions. The public will immediately be able to understand them and connect with themselves and their families in order to take a positive step in dealing with their health. The goal of each story is to create healthier, more positive outcomes in communities of color.
For example, Steven “DJ Suss One” Sussman, a favorite in-game radio DJ who can be heard spinning on the airwaves and The Sherri Shepherd Showlost a loved one to heart disease. Like many of us who have lost a parent, it is important to consider the genetic link to disease. It led him to this The CHECK INwhere he underwent Sorin's state-of-the-art Heart Scan which provides patients with HeartFlow's AI software imaging technology so they can see first-hand how their heart works.
Another story told The CHECK IN are music moguls like Dame Dash, its founder The America Nu Networkand his journey with type 1 diabetes since the age of 15, and also explores the story of music executive Steve Lobel, who shares his recent encounter with a debilitating and near-death health scare from an enlarged prostate.
The CHECK IN it's Hip-Hop, stories, health and healing, all on one platform. Dr. Puma, Coach Kenya and Maino bring the conversation about Hip-Hop and Health into the mainstream. Hopefully, by highlighting all the resources available in the community and having some of Hip-Hop's biggest players share their stories, we can help address health complications early and prevent heart disease where possible, especially those that affect communities of color.
