ConsequenceDrum Week 2018 couldn't have come to fruition without the help of some of our favorite percussionists. After checking out all of our drummers' survey responses, check out the essential drum albums and songs selected by Mike Portnoy, Charlie Benante, and David Lovering of the Pixies, andDon't forget to check out our list of the 100 Greatest Drummers of All Time.
Drums are a primordial instrument. They connect us to our tribal past and our intrinsic fascination with rhythm; they can awaken deep emotions within us and leave us breathless with their force and volume.
The greatest drummers in history have used these traits to their advantage, whether pioneers like Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich, prog mavens like Neil Peart and John Bonham, or barrier-breakers like Tony Royster Jr. and Sheila E. It is through these artists and their foundational work behind the kit that we can measure the widespread impact of drumming.
In our attempt to track down which celebrated efforts have shined the brightest throughout history for our list of the 100 Greatest Drummers of All Time, we asked over 60 drummers from a variety of genres to tell us who they are. they would point to as the greatest of all time. While their answers were different, a significant portion made it onto our list – even some of the ones we surveyed made it onto the list! But even if not all of these picks passed the test for us, each percussionist listed here is held in the highest esteem by drummers, who owe much of their musical identity to him.
So join our drumming circle and read on to see who the drummers are that the likes of Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy, Foo Fighters' Josh Freese, Anthrax's Charlie Benante, Pixies' David Lovering, The Melvins' Dale Crover, and Weezer's Florrie and Patrick Wilson consider to be the best behind the drum kit.
