Speaking about the song, Meloy said: “'All I Want Is You' is a love song. A love song without regrets that you wear on your sleeve. I don’t write many of those, at least not in this sense.”
Next, Meloy offered some insight into the origins of the new single. “The song came out of the finger-picking pattern—'I don't want pretty poses…'—and I just followed that example,” she said. “In the end, it just wrote itself. It's so basic that it lived for a long time in my composition notebook, sort of hidden, before I worked up the courage to publish it. It shares a title and hook with many previous songs, but I like to think I'm simply adding my own version of that tradition.”
