If at this point we have learned anything about Four Tet, it is that a lot can be said with so few words.
There is not a single spoken word on their new album, Three. But his music glows with coded epiphanies, the illusory kind that can only arise from Four Tet's singular imagination.
Each instrumental track is a mosaic that speaks in tongues of warm resonance and glitchy futurism. A master at uniting conflicting emotions, Four Tet produces bleak ambient ballads at times and carefree, airy house music at others.
Three weaves crackling IDM and folktronica into an embroidered ether that blooms with each passing phrase. Like most Four Tet albums, it's a secret grove with eerie liminal spaces to get lost in.
A case in point is “Sliding Through Everything,” an undeniable highlight. Flooded by a haze of ghostly arpeggios, its effervescent production eventually mutates into a haunting coda. The same goes for “Storm Crystals,” a dazzling track that might release your serotonin if it weren't for its mind-numbing synths.
Three is out now on Four Tet's own Text Records label. Listen to the full album below.
