Jo Whiley asked “And Bono’s good is he? Because we haven’t spoken to him or seen him for quite a while.”:
The Edge: “Yeah no he’s great, we were in the studio the other day just working on some crazy new music so yeah… he’s good.”
So we will hear some new U2 music?:
“We’re at that great phase where we don’t have to over think it, we’re just making music and loving that process. And then we’ll figure out where things belong afterwards so there’s a couple of different projects. Definitely U2, with Larry which is wonderful, we’ve got him in the studio… he’s good, he’s taking it easy but he’s back in the saddle on the drums still doing some recording with us and so we’ll be doing a bit more of that before the end of the year.
And then Bono and I are working on some crazy kind of sci-fi Irish folk music… which could end up becoming a part of the new U2 album, we’re not sure yet we’ll see. Part of our kind of process is to go so widely away from, off track, and then sort of the process of bringing things back on track is kind of how you get sort of unique sounding music.”
Asking for more information about the sci-fi element:
“We have Brian Eno involved. And a bunch of, you know some beautiful, Irish musicians, you know so incredibly talented…”
When asked about his first job:
“My first fee-paying job was on a farm picking potatoes from a potato harvester”
Did you do many seasons?
“I just did one, what was enough.”
When asked if he does karaoke:
“Recently, as you know we were in Vegas for an extended period of time so we kept looking to try and find the subculture and we found a couple of cool places to hang out and one of them was a karaoke bar and it hadn’t changed since the 50s so we would go there occasionally, I went towards the end of the run, and got up and did Should I Stay or Should I Go by The Clash, and Daydream Believer – The Monkees. And I got this amazing compliment from the karaoke guy as I was leaving, he said ‘hey – where have you been hiding’, I said ‘I haven’t been much over the last… ’ he said ‘You could do this professionally’ and I’d just come off stage from the Sphere. It was great.”
When asked if he has a treasured possession:
“I mean, there’s bits and bobs from the family home. When my parents passed we did a bit of a clear out and that was, we got some amazing things. Actually one piece which I handed back to our singer… We’d always heard this story from Bono that he’d written the first lyrics to I Will Follow on his 18th Birthday, this was kind of our Irish and folk law. So I’m going through my parents’ bedroom, after my dad passed and I discovered the draw where my mum kept all the U2 clippings and all the stuff over the…. And it’s like this big collection of press whatever and down the bottom I found this diary from like 1970… I guess it was 78 or whenever and, sure enough, I turned to Bono’s birthday and there were the lyrics to I Will Follow! He had been telling us the truth all these years. So I very happily handed it back to him.”
