The Gloom Unit is a West Coast horror duo consisting of Acetone Boogie and Frankie Goldie. One coming straight from Tucson, Arizona and the other representing Sin City Las Vegas, Nevada respectively as part of the Swamp Society collective. Acetone has been laying it down for the underground for over a decade at this point, releasing a total of 3 solo LPs at the time of writing this review, and Frankie has established himself artistically by making a few features and even releasing 2 solo singles. But after coming together in the fall and prior to their debut EP in the form of a few singles, Acetone & Frankie want to Come on Vary properly introducing themselves to kick off the new year with Chapter 17/Psychopathic Records' in-house producer Devereaux starting to finish.
After the intro, first song “Anna in da Attic” is an occult trap opener that pays homage to Insane Clown Posse's best narrative track, the chrome-dirty “Amy's in the Attic,” while “Blood on My Chucks” organically gives off more of a west coast spitting bad shit vibe with the bells going back to “Real G Shit” from Blaze Ya Dead Homie's self-titled debut EP and I just mean that as a compliment. “Dead Ringer” goes back to the turf trying to figure out why they hate” just before “Bury da Bones” works in some pianos and hats talking about how nobody else likes them. Then “LeanGutt” closes the EP on a triumphant trap note with chopped and screwed elements dedicated to thugs.
These guys only get better with every single they give us, so that was more than enough to convince me that Come on Vary would be a promising introduction to who the Gloom Unit really is. Now that we've finally got their debut EP to kick off 2024, it should absolutely please the juggalos and maybe even a few G*59 fans. Devereaux's production is mostly trap oriented with added west coast hip hop elements or even cut and screwed mixed in leaving it to both Acetone Boogie and Frankie Goldie to further refine their chemistry.
