Taylor SwiftShe's got that red lip, that classic thing you love — all thanks to Gucci Westman. While appearing in Today with Honda and Jenna On Tuesday (April 2), the makeup artist revealed that she was the first to introduce the pop star to crimson lipstick in 2009, inadvertently creating what has become her signature look.
According to Westman, Swift's now-iconic look began on the singer's 2009 set Allure magazine cover shoot. “I remember really wanting to do a red lip on her because I'd never seen her with a red lip before,” recalls the beauty mogul.
“And her mom, if I may say so, was like, 'Well, Taylor doesn't wear red,'” he continued. “And I said, 'Please, can I just try?'
The Westman Atelier founder added: “Look at her now… That was her first red.”
In the 15 years since that moment, red lipstick has become one of the most recognizable parts of Swift's image – second only to her blonde locks. In recent history, the “Anti-Hero” singer has been shadowing this year's Grammys and the 2024 Super Bowl, as well as most stops on her Eras world tour.
Red lips are so central to Swift's persona that she's been known to include references to the style in her music. “I can see the flames on my skin/ Crimson paint on my lips,” he sings Reputation“I Did Something Bad” and on 1989“Wildest Dreams” describes her as “red lips and rosy cheeks”.
