Crime in Mexico has claimed the life of yet another politician. A mayor was found beheaded just a week after his election.

Alejandro Arcos died on Sunday, October 6, just a few days after winning the mayoral race for Chilpancingo. a city south of Mexico City. According to local news, he was found with a severed head. Soon after photos of his head on top of a truck went viral on the popular messaging app WhatsApp. Al Jazeera exhibitions that the late mayor was on his way to Petakigias, but had decided to dispense with guards securing him. “The mayor was going to Petaquillas for a meeting alone,” Security Minister Garcia Harfuch said. “We know he was going to a specific meeting, he was unaccompanied, communication was lost in the community and the discovery [of his body] it happened hours later.”
Of course the killing made headlines across the Central American country. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the act and made it clear that Arcos' murder would be prosecuted. “We will strengthen the investigative intelligence capabilities of the Mexican government,” he told reporters. Evelyn Salgado Pineda, governor of Guerrero expressed her regret through X, formerly known as Twitter. “His loss has saddened the entire community of Guerrero and fills us with indignation,” he wrote.
Friends and family of Alejandro Arcos carried his coffin across the city on Monday, October 7 for the funeral service. He was 43 years old.
