This week, In defense of ska He's heading outside the United States to immerse himself in the massive ska scene in Mexico. Together with José “Deals” Olan, an experienced musician and promoter in Mexico, the team explores the region's fans, massive festivals and more. Listen above or wherever you get your podcasts.
Olan started out playing the saxophone in several bands (Bad Manners, Tijuana No, The Toasters, Maskatesta), and now leads his own group, Out of Control Army. Around the same time he launched that project, he also organized his first major ska festival, Mexico City's Non Stop Ska. Although ska had fallen out of popularity in the mid-2000s, Olan had faith in the community and his gamble paid off, as the festival attracted tens of thousands of people. Now, big ska festivals are the norm in Mexico.
In addition to his work, Olan guides In defense of ska through the history of the genre in Mexico. From major bands to the peaks and valleys of the genre's mainstream appeal, Mexico has established itself as one of the most exciting places in the world when it comes to great ska music.
