A small but powerful group could be heard shouting into a megaphone throughout the ceremony
A lot of people are complaining The Israel-Hamas war at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards was heard throughout the ceremony, according to multiple reports.
A small group of protesters began chanting “Free Palestine” and “cease fire now” over loudspeakers as celebrities gathered to walk the red carpet at the awards ceremony on Sunday, with the protest continuing until the ceremony began. The ceremony takes place outdoors in a beach tent on the Santa Monica Pier.
At one point, protesters were heard as Jim Gaffigan was on stage presenting an award to his cast Jury duty. Later in the show, host Aidy Bryant acknowledged the protests, saying: “We're at the beach and people are exercising their freedom of speech.”
Hosted by Jimmy O. Yang he also reportedly commented to a “bad guy” heard from outside, saying that while he couldn't understand what was being said, “We're a bunch of people who make indie films here. We are used to being shouted at.”
While people have gathered at other awards ceremonies this year, including the 2024 Grammy Awards, to protest after war broke out when Hamas terrorists led an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, the Spirit Awards are the first of the season to be protested they have disturbed.
Last month, a group of about 150 protesters went to the Sundance Film festival in solidarity with Palestine. The protesters were joined by ex Scream actress Melissa Barrera and Stand star Indya Moore.
