Empire of the Sun have returned with their fourth album, Ask that Godvia Capitol Records.
Inviting their fans, affectionately called the Empyreans, back into their musical universe, the album marks a triumphant return after an eight-year hiatus following 2016's album. Two Vines.
Luke Steele (Emperor Steele) and Nick Littlemore (Lord Littlemore) of the band bring a spiritual approach to their music, creating an inspiring experience. The duo have embarked on a new chapter this year, beginning with a run of five previously released singles from the album.
Each release is accompanied by a visually stunning music video directed by Michael Maxxis. Filmed in Thailand, the vibrant videos tell a cinematic story of otherworldly beings visiting Earth.
Steele describes the album as a journey of transcendence, filled with emotive sound design and storytelling that reflects the evolution of their lives. “It's a record about realization, about accepting mortality and eternal freedom,” he said.
The album’s first single, “Changes,” is an uplifting track that sets the stage for this new era and explores the theme of rebirth. Other tracks, such as “Cherry Blossom,” “Music on the Radio,” “The Feeling You Get,” and “AEIOU,” also capture Empire of the Sun’s new direction through euphoric, irresistible indietronica.
Elsewhere, “Television” explores the cosmic distinction between heaven and earth. It is one of three songs (along with “Changes” and “Cherry Blossom”) produced in Sweden with Salem Al Fakir and Vincent Pontare, known for their influential work with Avicii and Swedish House Mafia, respectively.
The band’s ability to create evocative and imaginative moments through music is further highlighted on standout tracks like the rebellious party tune “Revolve” and the upbeat “Wild World.” The album’s title track, “Ask That God,” is nostalgic and emotional, while “Rhapsodize” and “Friends I Know” offer a softer, more introspective sound.
