As a birthplace of Texas weirdness, Austin has long been a nail that refuses to be hammered. Despite its recent growth, die-hard Austinites like Jackie Venson know their city is steadfast in its identity. “I always want people to recognize Austin's unbreakable spirit,” she says, smiling.
Singer-songwriter Jackie Venson's version of the blues – infused with R'n'B, psychedelic rock – has reinvigorated the Austin music scene with its invigorating electric sound. She became the first black woman to be named “Best Guitarist” at the Austin Music Awards and recently performed at Rolling Stone's Future of Music show at SXSW. Her father Andrew Venson was a longtime Austin musician who helped guide her down her musical path, so Austin flows freely in her blood. For newcomers, he has a tip. “Once you come here, you never leave. We call Austin the 'velvet groove'.”
So where would the musician recommend to those looking for a special night out in Austin? “Stubb's BBQ. The best place, the best sound, the best atmosphere.” The outdoor venue has long welcomed established names as well as up-and-coming talent to complement Austin's love of live music and great food. As for a more intimate club show, Antone's, easy… you name a name, and they've played here. Stevie Ray Vaughn, BB King, Muddy Waters, Gary Clark Jr., Buddy Guy, it's everybody.” Established in 1975, Austin's “home of the blues” has been a downtown mainstay for anyone hoping to meet the cream of the blues.
After you've had your fill of music, Venson recommends heading across the street for food at Micheladas Cafe Y Cantina. I brought my friends from Mexico to this restaurant and they wanted to come back the next day. The restaurant serves up an incredible Tex-Mex offering in Austin with ample outdoor seating and hefty portions. As for what he orders; “Fajita meat lovers. It's not just beef, it's gravy and mushrooms and bacon and onions and I'm hungry.”
Austin's laid-back music and culinary style permeate his fashion as well. As a city that embraces the best of tradition while welcoming eclecticism, economy is movement. She recommends Room Service Vintage for anyone hoping to get a great deal on some vintage yarn. As Venson admits, “Austin's style is… defiantly casual. Not only do we love to dress up, we're allergic to anyone who tries to pressure us into dressing up.”
