Liam Payne was remembered by the mother of former One Direction bandmate Harry Styles, Ann Twist, on Wednesday (October 16), just hours after the shocking news that the 31-year-old singer had died after falling from a third-floor balcony. the CasaSur Palermo hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Twist posted a broken heart emoji on Instagram along with the message 'Just a boy…' as a tribute to the singer whose death has shocked and saddened 1D fans and fellow musicians around the world. At the time of publication, Payne's former bandmates – Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson – did not appear to have commented on his death. But some former colleague X-Factor stars paid tribute, including Olly Murs, who starred in the UK version of the show the year before 1D joined the program after the members initially auditioned as solos.
“This news is devastating I'm at a loss for words 😣 we always laughed when we saw each other sometimes the announcements were just short and sweet but when we did it was mostly about how annoying his hair always was or love for Becks the old XF days and the tour we shared together,” Murs wrote alongside a photo of the two men laughing. “Liam shared the same passions as me, the same dreams, so to see his life end now so young hits hard, I'm really saddened and devastated for his family and of course his son Bear is losing a dad x I'm thinking of them ! RIP Liam.”
Also remembering the singer who broke out on his own after 1D went on hiatus in 2015 was Kelsey Parker, widow of Wanted's Tom Parker, 33, who died in 2022 of brain cancer. She posted a photo of Payne with the message: “Shocked to hear the news. Liam you were one of the kindest souls to support Tom and me. You have continued to support me and the kids over the past few years ❤️ I will never forget the love and support you have shown us. I truly hope you have found peace 🙏🏻✨ My thoughts are with your family, friends and loved ones ❤️.”
According to PeoplePayne was among the guests who supported Parker's bandmates and Kelsey Parker at her husband's funeral in April 2022. In a second post based on 1D's “Little Things,” Kelsey Parker wrote: “TODAY IS A REMINDER THAT LIFE IS VERY LONELY. SO LOVE A LITTLE DEEPER, HUG A LITTLE TIGHTER AND NEVER FORGET THE OPPORTUNITY TO SAY “I LOVE YOU” TO THE ONES YOU LOVE BECAUSE TOMORROW IS NEVER PROMISED 🙏🏻✨ ❤️.”
Wanted's Max George also paid tribute to Payne, writing: “Absolutely devastating news. I met Liam way back when 1D were on the X Factor. In recent years I had the pleasure of meeting him personally and spent valuable time with him. Liam was absolutely wonderful in terms of support when Tom became ill, performing with us at the Royal Albert Hall for Stand Up To Cancer. He was very personally supportive of me after Tom's death. I will never forget this. My thoughts are with his family, friends and fans around the world at this tragic time. Rest in peace Liam. Much love brother 🖤.”
The careers of The Wanted and One Direction have roughly overlapped, with the former group releasing their self-titled debut album in October 2010 and 1D dropping their debut, All night longa year later. THE X-Factorthe British reality show that helped launch 1D also remembered Payne, writing: “We are heartbroken.”
