Today, the Zutons share 'Creeping On The Dancefloor', their first new single in 16 years. Taken from the upcoming album The Big Decider, due for release on April 26, 'Creeping On The Dancefloor' marks a feel-good return to the highest levels that haven't always been easy in the years the band have been away.
As each member of the band returned to make their most exciting music to date, 'Creeping On The Dancefloor' quickly came into view, epitomizing their acceptance of the good times to come.
Singer and guitarist Dave McCabe says: “We wrote 'Creeping On The Dancefloor' during lockdown when Abi moved into the house and we were all living together in our little bubble. But I think because we were all stuck in the house and I was singing it on my phone, just the melody and some of the words to keep the noise down, when we got loose and recorded it with the band it had great energy. It's one of those songs that you want to hear again as soon as you finish it and that's always a good sign.”

THE ZUTONS' first album together in 16 years, The great decider, is out April 26 and was recorded at Abbey Road Studios with legendary songwriter and producer Nile Rodgers, along with the band's original producer Ian Broudie. The multi-platinum band released three studio albums between 2004 and 2008, scoring 9 Top 40 singles in the UK, including two Top 10 hits with 'Why Won't You Give Me Your Love?' and the conquering 'Valerie', the latter a triple platinum hit for Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse.
The great decider It is presented as an album of great importance for the band, completed by Dave McCabe (guitar, lead vocals), Abi Harding (saxophone, vocals) and Sean Payne (drums, vocals). Written against the backdrop of a decade and a half of lived experiences, it is born under the weight of family tragedies, lives lost and created, reality checks, and home truths faced and observed. Struggling to get into shape under the kind of steam that only decades-long friendships – with all their messy failures, make-ups, breakups and, ultimately, love – can muster, The great decider It became the sound of water passing under the bridge, and the love of music, the love of each other, and the love of creating together became the most important thing of all.
Interestingly, the pandemic apparently accelerated the process of the band's next phase. As McCabe characterizes that time, shortly before entering rehab: “We all lived together in our own little bubble, with lots of booze and mushrooms and lots of bonding! It was necessary.” It was McCabe's subsequent time in rehab that really brought about a turning point in the positivity of the new album and the joyful experience of putting it together. Harding says: “Dave has been through a lot over the last few years and these things have obviously impacted him greatly. But his songwriting has only gotten better. He now dedicates more time to his songs. He is in touch with his own emotions and those of others, and all of that is reflected in his songs. It has been very nice to see him grow. “I'm so proud of him.”
Speaking about the new album, singer and guitarist Dave McCabe says: “Working with Nile was simply an incredible experience. It gave me a confidence that I had never felt before making a record. He is a very calm person and knows how to listen. In the song 'Disappear', I wrote a spoken word piece about the Zutons traveling the stars and galaxies asking the most powerful question in the universe: “Why?” I asked Nile if he had read it out loud at the top of the final section of the song, thinking he would just say no. But he jumped into the vocal booth with his chain around his neck and his sunglasses on and did about 20 different takes, all in different styles of himself. It was amazing! It was like he really traveled the universe in some spaceship and just made music in his spare time. He is simply one of the coolest people I have ever met.
It was also great to reconnect with Ian Broudie on this record. He told me that the Big Decider demo made him cry and that's why he said yes to working with us again. It was one of the first songs we wrote for the album, so that reaction from Ian made me feel like we were doing something right. “The song spoke for itself.”
Long awaited, authentically hard-earned, tremendously self-aware and truly worth the wait, The great decider is the sound of a band that channels what Abi Harding describes as a lifetime of “great chemistry and great connection.” Or, as Sean Payne says: “We had a genuine sense of a shared vision. In the past we haven't really said how we feel or taken it badly. But this album was different. “We didn’t really feel good until everything was the way we wanted it.”
As joyful as it is moving, as sincere as it is triumphant and, for the band, as liberating as it is cathartic, The great decider reminds us that The Zutons' magical songwriting intelligence has been absent for too long. They are The Zutons; They are back and here to improve their 2024.
