The Golden Globes are always a bit more relaxed than most awards show – after all, there is an open bar. So it was only fitting that at the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday (January 7) night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, one winner took his acceptance speech as an opportunity for a little human contact with an iconic rocker.
When it was revealed that Poor won Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, a group of people behind the film, including star/producer Emma Stone and director/producer George Lanthimos, took the stage. Stone had spoken earlier that night when she won the award for best performance by a female actress in a motion picture – musical or comedy and chose to step down from her position as a producer on the film, forcing the Greek director to take the microphone.
Given that the unconventional film is about a young woman (played by Stone) trying to make the most of life regardless of societal expectations, it was perhaps inevitable that Lanthimos dropped polite protocol at the Globes and used his moment in the spotlight to satiate his hungry heart.
“I just wanted to talk to Bruce Springsteen all night,” Lanthimos said as he grabbed the microphone. “We have the same birthday – September 23rd!” As Stone and the Poor The cast and crew laughed behind him as the camera cut to Springsteen flashing a thumbs up from his table. (Springsteen was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2024 for writing “Addicted to Romance” for came to me which was up for Best Original Song but lost to Billie Eilish O'Connell and “What Was I Made For?” by Finneas O'Connell. from overproduction Barbie film.)
“He's been my hero since I was growing up,” Lanthimos explained. “Anyway, I'm wasting my time.”
Lanthimos went on to thank Searchlight Pictures for producing the film, its cast and crew (“Emma, she's the best,” he said), but he couldn't leave without another shout-out to The Boss. “Thank you, Bruce Springsteen, for making me grow up [sic] as I did.”
When the social gatherings said “sit down”, George stood up. Growing up.
