In the rhythm of modern relationships, long-distance couples often find their melodies drowned out by the silence of separation.
Enter a new type of speaker, SoundMotion, which was designed by Zhujun Pang of Eindhoven University of Technology. The technology presents an approach to bridging challenging emotional distances through the shared physical experience of music.
Aiming to change the tune of love from afar, the idea for SoundMotion was conceived amidst a sobering statistic. According to statistics, more than 37% of geographically separated couples are likely to separate in just three months.
At the heart of SoundMotion's design is the concept of tangible interaction: using physical movements and gestures to communicate. The device's most notable feature is its “hat,” a fun canopy that acts as a switch and availability indicator. By opening the hat at different angles, users can control the device, switch between modes, and activate the device's “Couples Channel” for seamless, synchronized music sharing.
“While the Internet provides convenient channels for instant communication, such as text messaging and video chats, these technologies primarily focus on the transmission of explicit information and overlook the emotionally rich communication necessary in intimate relationships,” according to Pang.
SoundMotion remains a prototype for now, but by integrating the emotional language of music with intuitive physical interactions, it's easy to see how the speaker has the potential to give long-distance couples a new way to keep playing their tunes. of love, regardless of the distance.
