On today's episode of “How It Gont Down,” Tinashe reveals how she created “Nasty,” from the beat to the music video. She shares her reactions to the memes and virality of the song, discusses whether she's found someone to “match her freak” and more!
Tinashe:
Hi, I'm Tinashe and this is How It Went Down for my song “Nasty”. I really wanted to create a song that was fun, that had that confident energy. So I thought there was no better song than to write something like that came from this persona I've created in my head. Nasty Nashe is that character that I like to touch when I'm feeling really confident and swagger and hot and sexy. So I wanted to write a song from that perspective, sort of. So I thought, why not just write a song called “Nasty”. The session for “Nasty” happened a few times. The first session we did, we worked on the beat with Ricky Reed, we were making this kind of two-chord section that went from this minor to this major chord, which I really liked. I took that beat with me and started brainstorming ideas. And then I would drive around in my car and record myself singing and vibing and free-rhythming. And suddenly, I thought: “I was an ugly girl, ugly. Will anyone match my freak?' It really just felt instinctive. It was just something that came to me at the time. So I listened to this recording, took it to the studio and thought, I think I got an idea. When I'm in the studio, I like to be comfortable. I like to be alone in my zone. I don't want too many distractions.
