So Tommy Richman is hip-hop now? The Virginia singer will be up for a pair of rap Grammys next February, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The viral hit “Million Dollar Baby” is up for best rap song and best rap melodic performance, the publication said.
The nominations haven't been announced yet, but if the song is indeed nominated, it will be up against other monstrous rap records like Megan Thee Stallion's “Hiss,” Ye's “Carnival,” and Ty Dolla$'s “Carnival.” ign and Metro Boomin's “Like This,” and Kendrick Lamar's “Not Like Us,” all of which have reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this year. Richman's effort, however, famously peaked at No. 2 because it was released in the middle of Drake and Kendrick's historic rap battle and blocked by Lamar's knockout hit “Not Like Us.”
This news comes after Richman jumped on X and stated that he is “not a hip hop artist” and then commented back after receiving backlash from fans and popular West Coast radio personality DJ Hed. Tommy then tried to further clarify, saying, “I meant to say I'm not SOLEY a hip hop artist,” as he went back and forth with Hed.
“Million Dollar Baby” is also up for record of the year, song of the year and may be up for best new artist, according to THR. He also featured in his ISO Supremacy boss Brent Faiyaz's track “Better time”, which was also submitted.
Richman released his debut album Coyote in September.
Bulletin board reached out to both the Grammys and Tommy's team for comment, the latter of which declined to comment.
