Etacas are the British duo Rob Reng and Jefferson Duke, and here they tell us about their new single, sin eater.
How was the song recorded (what was the process like, who was it recorded with, how was the track created)?
We are children of the Internet, so our creation process is rarely done together. We have a process of sharing Rob's many musical sketches, which typically contain drum, bass and synth ideas in a rough arrangement. Jefferson then adds vocals, melodies, lyrics and guitars, which are then returned to Rob for further production, mixing and mastering by him. Our WhatsApp chat related to our music is off the charts – we've never been so in touch with anyone about anything!…
…so every time we meet face to face, it's like being in a room with two hyperactive children.
What inspired you to write/create the song?
Musically, we were both interested in the pulsating, bubbling side of disco mixed with new order-style guitar lines, combined with a euphoric 'take on the world' style chorus. Rob sent an initial skeleton that inspired Jefferson to tell the story of falling in love with a Sin Eater. Lyrically, he has always enjoyed writing from other people's perspectives, as well as composing songs from different periods in history. The song was inspired by a family member telling us about Sin Eating, which we found fascinating and thought there was enough here for a song. Writing about the ritual wasn't enough, so we wrote from the point of view of two Sin Eaters who are outcasts from society and fall in love.
What is the message you want listeners to take away from the song?
When you find someone who supports and understands you, it can give you the strength to believe that you can conquer the world.
How did you get into music?
We have both been musical and multi-instrumentalists since early childhood. Rob was very into electronic and dance music and in fact he already had a successful career as a breakbeat DJ/Producer with multiple Radio 1 plays and a number one single on the DMC World Charts. Jefferson was much more into the guitar side and took his pedal loop live show to great heights and great acclaim. Together we are a modern force to be reckoned with!
Do you have any concerts/tours planned in the future? Where?
We will be on tour in 2024, there are no specific dates yet.
