Music has always been important in bringing attention to social and political issues, especially for those who feel like they have no voice. There is a rich heritage of artists who have used music to foster change: Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Gil Scott-Heron and Billy Bragg, to name just a few in a long and important list. And you can add Ferocious Dog to that list.
'Blood Soaked Shores' is the second release from his upcoming album, Kleptocracy, released on May 17 via Graphite Records. It's three fun minutes of folk-punk that examines our participation in questionable wars and the price soldiers and their families pay. Ferocious Dog lead singer Ken Bonsall experienced this first-hand after his son, Lee, sadly took her own life after serving in Afghanistan.
“When the rain washes the blood from the streets/Where mothers and fathers cry in vain for their loved ones/Our memories diminish with each passing day/But we will not be silenced, we will fight for our word”, Bonsall cries as he vows to fight for the justice that soldiers and their families deserve. Backed by a fast-paced musical offering that sounds like a wonderful hybrid of The Pogues, Stiff Little Fingers and Dropkick Murphys, served on a tasty, well-packaged cob, Ferocious Dog is proof that you can make music that sounds great and still deliver. a message about important and challenging topics.
The Hell Hounds, the collective name for the band's fans, will be happy with this new offering and the promise it holds for their new album. I'm pretty sure this song will also be aired on their next tour. If you like music with strength, purpose, energy and integrity, listen to Ferocious Dog. Carry on… you might just become a new Hell Hounds recruit!
