More than three decades since his radio heyday, the songwriter's original 1988 recording returns to the charts at Number 42
Tracy Chapman's “Fast Car” re-entered Billboard's Hot 100 at No. 42 this week after a surge in sales and streams following her performance with Luke Combs at the Grammy Awards a week ago. The reintroduction marks the first time Chapman's version has entered the songs chart in more than 35 years, according to the publication: “Fast Car” last appeared on the Hot 100 the week of Oct. 22, 1988.
The song's resurgent week can mostly be attributed to an astronomical jump in traditional sales following last week's Grammys performance with 35,000, up more than 8,000 percent from the previous week. But streams also increased significantly with more than 6 million last week, more than double the previous week. The song's streams more than tripled the day after the Grammys, as well Rolling rock reported last week.
Chapman's version had naturally returned to the mainstream after Combs released his cover of the song last April. His version topped the country chart last year, making Chapman the first black woman to have a country Number One song as a sole writer.
Since then, Combs' version spent much of the next year near the top of the Hot 100, peaking at Number Two. His version climbed back to No. 8 after his duet with Chapman, Billboard reported Monday. That performance was one of the most beloved parts of the awards this year, a months-long moment that began with a 30-minute private conversation between Chapman and Combs in November.
