Travis Fimmel is back in the spotlight with Dune: Prophecythe sprawling new HBO series set 10,000 years before the hit movies. Speaking with Kyle Meredith, Fimmel delves into his role as Desmond Hart, a battle-hardened soldier who wields mysterious mental powers, as well as his own brand of beer, Travla. Listen above or wherever you get your podcasts.
The show's dark intrigue and willingness to push boundaries are what attracted Fimmel to the project. “It's not your typical hero's journey. “Everyone has problems and that makes it a big enigma.” He attributes the construction of the world to Dune: Prophecy to immersive sets and costumes, although he insists that his work as an actor is universal. “Whether it's a cowboy movie or a science fiction movie, everyone wants to be loved, they feel anger, they feel hate. “What is at stake is the same,” he explained. Still, he's not above cutting lines to maintain a character's mystery. “The more you talk, the more you reveal. “I prefer to let people wonder.”
Outside of Hollywood, Fimmel's passion project is as difficult as his roles. Their beer brand, Travla, is a scrappy enterprise rooted in its Australian agricultural roots. “We don't have a budget,” he laughed, recounting his DIY marketing escapades that include wrangling snakes and recording promotional videos on his phone. For Fimmel, the effort is as much about representing farm workers as it is about brewing beer: “Farmers are forgotten. “We wanted a beer that would give city people a taste of the country.”
