We explore our June cover star Ty Dolla $ign's passion for music, which originates from his father and extends to peers like Ye, YG and Mustard. He shares the story of how “Toot It & Boot It” was created and the subsequent success that opened several doors for him.
Ty Dolla $ign:
He's the most talented son of a bitch to ever come out of Los Angeles. I know we got a lot of the best rappers, the best… the most talented motherfucker to come out of Los Angeles, is you, boy. It's crazy how they still have the same stickers and shit.
Tyrone Griffin Sr.:
Yeah.
Ty Dolla $ign:
Yeah, that's… I've been here so many times in my life, man. It's great to see the place is still here. When was the store last open?
Tyrone Griffin Sr.:
90s. '95, '96. Yes, that's when we closed.
Ty Dolla $ign:
I was here with him, you know, running around little kids and like he looked like a fucking spaceship before.
I started in music, I would say by watching my dad, just watching and I like to learn. My dad didn't even know. He had no idea. Then one day, he goes to the bathroom. After listening to it, I'm trying to learn this part that I wasn't quite clicking on. And I went up to the keyboard and played what he was hearing and he was very surprised, and this was when I was four years old.
Everything I learned from Pops: I learned how to play keyboard, bass, guitar, I learned how to make beats, how to use Pro Audio, everything related to recording. Everyone's work, I learned from it, you know what I'm saying?
Keep watching to learn more!
