While “ST. CHROMA,” at 85 seconds long, was a bit fake as the lead single, “NOID” is a meatier offering from the hip-hop auteur. With a progressive snare-driven beat, Sabbath-style guitars, and bubbling synths and piano, “NOID” builds more momentum with each musical phrase. Tyler raps about experiencing some major paranoia: “I can't even buy a house privately,” he says, before muttering in a panic: “Look at every car that goes by / I think my neighbors want me dead.” He concludes the track by crooning “Someone's watching/I can feel it” over kaleidoscopic synths.
“NOID” also arrives with a music video directed by Tyler and starring actress and comedian Ayo Edibiri. At all times, Tyler, complete with his CHROMACOPY mask, the same as the “ST. CHROMA Video: You move through various locations while being harassed, watched, and tricked by people along the way. Edibiri plays a crazed fan who runs up to Tyler with her phone and a glass of water in her hand, then points a gun at him.
Eventually, Tyler moves from the busy city to the mountains, where he races down the road in paranoia. The video concludes with a shot of Tyler dancing on an asphalt while his shadow moves in contradictory ways. Watch the video for “NOID” below.
Meanwhile, Tyler also recently shared the lineup for the 10th anniversary edition of his Camp Flog Gnaw festival in Los Angeles, which takes place Nov. 16-17.
