Usher is firmly in his zone on his long-awaited ninth album, I'm coming home. The 45-year-old R&B veteran who is set to take the stage for halftime at Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday (February 11) dropped the 20-track, guest-studded set on Friday morning (February 9) and it's everything you'd want from 'Yeah !” singer.
On his first studio album since 2016 Hard II LoveUsher serves up all the seductive low-boil jams you'd expect, from the simmering single 'Good Good' featuring Summer Walker and 21 Savage to the simmering ballad 'Kissing'. Strangers,” in which he screams, “How do we go from strangers kissing to kissing strangers?”
After toe-opening Michael Jackson meets Afrobeats collaboration Burna Boy “Coming Home,” Usher shows hometown love on Billy Joel interlude, Latto on “A-Town Girl,” flipping Piano Man's Tony East Coast-repping 1983 hit “Uptown Girl” in a dirty southern tribute to a woman who can twerk and skate.
There's, of course, plenty of frustration (“Cold Blooded” featuring The-Dream), with confident disco (“Big”), mid-tempo Eurosynth exhortations to keep the party going (“Keep on Dancin'”) and straight-up all-night sex jams (“Stone Cold Freak”).
The compilation is filled with a parade of guest singers and rappers, from the meditative collaboration HER to “Risk It All” from The Color Purple soundtrack, to the sultry “Ruin” featuring Nigerian rapper/producer Pheelz, in which serial seducer Usher laments that his ex “ruined me for everybody,” even as he brags that other women keep blowing up his phone. The album ends with the remix of Usher's collaboration with K-pop icon Jung Kook from BTS on the latter's single, “Standing Next to You”.
And, don't worry, Ush has plenty of slow jams for these pair of skates (“I Love U,” “Please U,” “Luckiest Man”) in the collection as well. Super Bowl LVIII will take place on February 11 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and will be broadcast on CBS and streamed on Paramount+, Sling TV, Hulu+Live TV and FuboTV.
