Fresh from the release of their new album Only God was above us, Vampire Weekend made a surprise appearance at a Goose show on Wednesday night. To begin their second set at The Capitol Theater in Port Chester, New York, the jam band brought out the indie veterans to perform “Gen-X Cops” and a 30-minute (!) version of “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” . .” stream the full set below.
“We're going to have some special guests here,” Goose member Peter Anspach said as the band entered the second hour of their monster four-hour set. Once Ezra Koenig, Chris Baio and Chris Thomson took the stage, the two bands launched into an improvised, yet relatively faithful, rendition of the track. Only God was above us cut “Generation X Cops.” He followed Vampire Weekend's fan-favorite “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” into a half-hour-long jam of beats and solos.

The appearance fittingly comes after Koenig teased that he had an “improvised” side project in the works. As if he were co-signing Koenig's new project, Anspach commented, “Those guys can hang out,” as the band walked offstage. The bands had previously collaborated in 2021, as Goose contributed a cover of “2021 (January 5, to be exact)” to Vampire Weekend. 40:42 EP.
The concert was the final performance of Goose's four performances at The Capitol Theatre, a stint that served as the band's return after a brief break from touring. The shows also marked the debut of new drummer Cotter Ellis, who replaced founding member Ben Atkind after his departure. In June, the band will launch a major summer tour. The Capitol Theater wasn't the only place Vampire Weekend stopped by on Wednesday, however, as the band also made an appearance at The daily program. The three members chatted with Michael Kosta on Only God was above Usliving in Los Angeles, and his podcast Vampire Bonfire before performing the single “Mary Boone.” Watch the clip below.
Vampire Weekend has its own major tour on the horizon. After attending the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Kilby Block Party, Primavera Sound, and (as recently announced) Coachella, the band will begin their North American tour on June 6 in Houston, Texas. You can buy tickets here.
