Vampire Weekend are back with “Mary Boone,” the latest single from their upcoming album. Only God was above us.
“Mary Boone” features angelic backing vocals and lush orchestrations, a drum loop sampled from Soul II Soul’s “Back to Life (However Do You Want Me),” and kaleidoscopic synths that appear in each wordless chorus. The song's title refers to the art dealer and collector who became known in the New York City art scene during the 1980s.
Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig narrates a scene in which a new town resident seeks work with Mary Boone, then expands the theme to include themes of lost love and change. The official visualizer for the song features rapper Despot as he drives from New Jersey to New York City through the Lincoln Tunnel. Look at the image below.

“Mary Boone” is Vampire Weekend’s fourth offering since Only God was above us. The band released “Capricorn” and “Gen-X Cops” when they announced the LP in February and shared “Classical” on March 14. Plus gearing up for a major headlining tour in 2024 (get tickets here), Vampire Weekend has also recently released vampire campfire, a podcast where the trio has casual chats. They also teased a slightly “punky” and slightly “jammy” side project in a profile this month.
Only God was above us comes out April 5.
