“This song really captures the flirtation and overall feeling of being so undeniably attracted and into someone,” Justice says
The summertime makes Victoria Justice feel just a bit extra sexy. On Friday, the actress and musician released the tropical R&B single “Down,” which she wrote over a trip to Baja California, Mexico with songwriters Toby Gad and Will Jay.
“I was inspired by the beautiful ocean views, and was in the mood to write a sexy summer song,” said Justice in a press release about the sultry track. “This song really captures the flirtation and overall feeling of being so undeniably attracted and into someone.”
She added: “I want people to hear this song and want to get up and move! I hope people will be dancing along to it with me all summer long.”
“Down” songwriter Gad said the track encapsulated Justice’s “natural self-expression” after being inspired by the beaches of Mexico. “[It captures] how she likes to move and interact with her love interest on the dance floor, bringing desire and passion to a hot summer fling,” he said.
“Down” is the latest taste of music from Justice, who’s been releasing songs as an independent artist over the last several months. She dropped her track “Raw” in mid-April and “Tripped” in February. She also starred in Remi Wolf’s video for “Motorcycle” in mid-June.
Justice appeared on the cover of Marie Claire in May and opened up about wanting to immerse herself fully in making music as an indie artist, explaining that doing things on her own “can be challenging.”
“Being independent is hard because I’m fully self-funded,” Justice said. “I’m not gonna get the major label push or get on the playlist spots that all the other artists get. There’s pros and cons to it.”
“Music was always something that I loved and was a part of me, and I knew that eventually I was going to come back to it,” she added. “My goal is that I want whoever’s listening to it to feel something from it—whether that’s something emotional and heartbreaking or feeling sexy and empowered.”
