As we've heard on their recent singles, 'Otherness' is a delightful and immersive listening experience. Their songs span multiple genres (folk, Americana, psychedelia, indie-rock, blues and soul), but the sheer force of their songwriting unites them. Their delightful vocal harmonies tell stories of fighting against insurmountable obstacles, striving for something more, and feeling like an outsider, while the music is performed in an exemplary and moving manner. After their debut album 'Superhuman' peaked at No. 1 on the Official Jazz & Blues Albums Chart and won UK Album of the Year at the UK Americana Awards 2023, who knows where? could 'Otherness' take them?
issy says, “This album is for anyone who feels like an outsider. “Otherness” is defined as being or feeling different in appearance or character from what is familiar, expected, or generally accepted. Ironically, this feeling of otherness is one that we all share and experience, orbiting our own planets.”
If you haven't yet fallen in love with Ferris and Sylvester, let the new live performance of 'Love Is Real' invite you into their world. It's a sleek, cinematic romance song that feels so instantly timeless that it's almost a mystery how it didn't exist before. It's also given another touch of class, with the four-piece band augmented by a string section. Represents the last image in a live performance series captured at Real World Studios.
Archie adds: “'We can't believe that after two years of starting this album, it is finally available in the world. Our lives have completely changed since that first day in our studio. We toured everywhere, we started a record label, we became parents and with that we learned what it's like to almost lose everything. This album is for anyone who feels like they are on the outside looking in. It's an album about self-discovery, love and loss. We hope that this album can be an ally and a friend.”
While numerous songs have preceded 'Otherness', the album also offers a wealth of essential new material for fans to delve into, from the fiery funk, blues and classic rock of 'Out Of It' to the delightfully delicate title track a via possibly the most beautifully intertwined vocals of the set at the midpoint highlight 'Paper Plane'.
Although 'Otherness' has a natural and slow atmosphere, it is actually the product of a difficult time for the couple. When her North American tour in support of her debut album came to an end, Issy was diagnosed with preeclampsia, resulting in her son being born six and a half weeks early in Nashville. She spent three weeks in intensive care and another month in hospital before the family could return home. That experience inspired them to write songs that could offer hope to others: that no matter what challenges you face, there is always hope. And that is the essence of “otherness.”
